New York City’s Department of Environmental Conservation have recently put the Green Police on the streets. The Green police are special unit of officers who make sure New Yorkers across the city are following environmental regulations. The Green Police are authorized by the DEC to issue citations for anyone the Green Police catches violating environmental laws. The Green Police hunt down lawbreakers in such unlikely places as fish vendors’ shops. Actually, this area of law enforcement is very important for the city of New York and the world at large. Strict laws about fishing have been put in place to ensure world fish stocks are replenished. (In recent decades, fish stocks have dropped to alarmingly low levels). So, fish vendors are required to only sell fish of a certain size, and they are certainly not allowed to sell fish that are endangered. The Green Police make sure these laws are followed so fish species do not disappear. The Green Police also protect New York’s air by making sure the city’s cars are following emission standards set forth by New York. The Green Police are armed with emission measuring equipment, and can issue tickets to drivers who are sending too much CO2 in the air.
