Danish Badminton Player Asks BWF to Make a Move on Players Withdrawing on Tourneys

The Denmark Open, which takes place this week, saw a number of withdrawals of players coming from China which prompted a Danish player to call on to Badminton World Federation (BWF) officials to make a move on those players who suddenly withdraw on tournaments which they initially committed to.
This weekend, several top shuttlers from China withdraw from the ninth leg of the BWF’s premier Super Series citing fatigue due to having participated in the recently concluded National Games. One of the players who withdrew was three-time world champion Lin Dan, who clinched the men’s singles gold medal at China’s National Games.
Last year, the Chinese team skipped an event in Sabah, citing the same reasons. This has been noticed on junior tournaments as well. As of current rules, BWF imposes a $250 fine for players confirming entry in tournaments but backing out at the last minute.
Danish player Peter-Gade Christensen is now asking for graver penalties for these players, saying that it is disrespectful to do such and that it affects the tournament as a whole. Despite this view, Christensen said that he will still do his best to win the title in home soil, in which he’s now confirmed the top seed.
BWF Chief Operating Officer Thomas Lund is expected to give his views about the matter when he arrives in time for the Denmark Open tournament.
