Our group of friends never imagined the radiant Amelia Smart, my high school BFF, might someday accessorize with wigs. Her iconic long black hair added so much to her mystique. But surprise surprise. The woman continues to be celebrated because of her hair. Not many in town realize she wears synthetic wigs. Guess it’s no secret anymore.

Back in the day as young girls in the hill country, we used to stole the spotlights to every dance. Five years later, her medical hair loss took effect and she became nearly bald. I hinted about these lace wigs. Even so it didn’t matter much. What a strong soul, she proudly unveiled her bald-headed look.

Obliged to show at our alma mater’s roller hockey tournament, we heckled till someone purposefully threw the sphere (or that thing they use) at the crowd. Quick on her feet, she went to grab it when her hand-knitted “head sweater” (her idea) flew right off, uncovering her shiny head. Like nothing happened, she lobbed it playfully into the goal. Attitude, did I mention she’s got it?

However, everyone has insecurities. Once she invited me over for a “Gilmore Girls” binge, when she looked me in the eye and informed me that she opts to go bald out of bitterness. She would never think about well crafted lace front wigs, secretly acknowledging she wanted one. She then miss invincible grew embarrassed and requested that I shouldn’t concern myself with it. She really needed help.

There was no way to get her words out of my head. Later on, I talked about getting her a new wig. Finally we came to the perfect solution: we’d buy each other wigs I used my credit card, and it was worth it.

We had a ball wig shopping, flabbergasted by the options. She never knew that human hair wigs were this fashionable for so many women. These lace front wigs made her so lovely. As for me, arranged an entirely modern wardrobe around my synthetic wig. We do it all together, forever and always. Recently she sent me her thanks for invisible lace front wig, and said it brought about a feminine mystique that she’d forgotten. It’s a relief to have helped her float about as light as a feather. We both are.
